Trincomalee

Trincomalee is a resort port city on the east coast of Sri Lanka and the administrative headquarters of both Trincomalee District and Eastern Province, with a population of 99,135. Built on a peninsula dividing an inner and outer harbour overlooking Trincomalee Harbour, it has been known historically as Gokanna and Gokarna and has served for nearly a thousand years as a center of Sri Lankan Tamil culture. Its landmarks include the Koneswaram temple, from which its Tamil name Thirukonamalai derives, along with the Bhadrakali Amman temple and Trincomalee Hindu College, founded in 1897.
