The Golden Triangle is a mountainous area of roughly 200,000 square kilometers spanning northeastern Myanmar, northern Thailand, and northern Laos, centered on the confluence of the Ruak and Mekong rivers. Since the 1950s it has been one of the largest opium producing regions in the world, and in recent decades has also become a center of synthetic drug manufacturing.
