Nukus is the capital of the autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan within Uzbekistan, lying near the Amu Darya river and ranking as the country's sixth-largest city. It was officially established in 1932 and grew from a small settlement into a planned Soviet city of broad avenues by the 1950s; its name derives from an old Karakalpak tribal name meaning New Kath in Persian. Nukus is best known today for its Nukus Museum of Art, which holds an important collection of Russian avant-garde and Uzbek works from 1918 to 1935, and its population was about 329,100 in 2022.
