Uzbekistan is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Kyrgyzstan to the northeast, Tajikistan to the southeast, Afghanistan to the south, and Turkmenistan to the southwest. It is one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world, the other being Liechtenstein. Uzbekistan declared independence from the Soviet Union on 31 August 1991, following the failed coup attempt in Moscow. Its capital and largest city is Tashkent.
