A once-vast inland salt lake straddling Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan that has shrunk to a small fraction of its former size since the mid twentieth century, after Soviet-era irrigation projects diverted the rivers that fed it. Its retreat is widely cited as one of the starkest human-caused environmental disasters of the modern era.
