A major river of Central Asia, formed by the union of the Panj and Vakhsh rivers and historically flowing into the Aral Sea, though heavy irrigation diversion now leaves much of its lower course dry in most years. Known to classical geographers as the Oxus, it has marked cultural and political boundaries across the region for millennia.
