One of the two major rivers of Central Asia, rising in the Tian Shan mountains and flowing northwest through Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan toward the Aral Sea. Known to classical geographers as the Jaxartes, its diversion for Soviet-era irrigation contributed heavily to the Aral Sea's shrinkage.
