The process by which water droplets or ice crystals within a cloud grow large enough to fall to the ground as rain, snow, sleet or hail, chiefly through collision and coalescence of droplets or through the Bergeron process, in which ice crystals grow at the expense of surrounding supercooled water droplets. The dominant mechanism and the resulting precipitation type depend heavily on a cloud's temperature structure.
