The development of a visible mass of condensed water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere, produced as rising air cools below its dew point and water vapor condenses around airborne particles. The altitude, temperature and rate of the air's ascent determine whether the result is a flat, layered stratus cloud, a puffy cumulus cloud, or a towering cumulonimbus thunderstorm.
