An atmospheric condition in which temperature increases with height rather than decreasing as it normally does, trapping cooler, denser air near the surface beneath a warmer layer above. Inversions suppress vertical mixing and can concentrate fog, smog and other pollutants near ground level until the inversion breaks down.
