The condensation of water vapor into a cloud of tiny droplets suspended at or near ground level, reducing visibility, produced when moist air is cooled to its dew point by contact with a cold surface, by mixing with cooler air, or by radiative cooling of the ground on a clear, calm night. Different formation mechanisms produce recognized fog types, including radiation fog that forms overnight in calm, clear conditions and advection fog carried in when warm, moist air moves over a colder surface such as the sea.
