Esker Formation

Glacial and Periglacial Processes

The deposition of a long, winding ridge of sand and gravel by a river of meltwater flowing within or beneath a glacier, which leaves the sediment-filled channel standing as a raised landform once the surrounding ice melts away. Eskers can extend for many kilometres and trace the former path of subglacial drainage.
