The creation of a tributary valley left standing well above the floor of the larger main valley it once joined, occurring where a smaller tributary glacier erodes far less deeply than the larger trunk glacier carrying much greater ice volume. Once the ice retreats, the tributary valley's stream is left plunging over the elevated lip into the main valley below, frequently producing a waterfall at the junction, as seen throughout Yosemite Valley.
