A smaller tributary valley whose floor sits distinctly higher than the floor of the larger main valley it joins, most often because a glacier in the main valley eroded its bed far deeper than the smaller glacier or stream in the tributary could manage. Where a hanging valley's stream meets the drop to the main valley floor, it commonly produces a waterfall.
