FAQs

Why was Port Macquarie founded?

It began in 1821 as a penal settlement for convicts who had reoffended in New South Wales.

Port Macquarie was founded in 1821 as a penal settlement. It replaced Newcastle as the destination for convicts who had committed secondary crimes in New South Wales, so it began as a place of punishment before it became the coastal city it is today.
