Niue is a self-governing island country in free association with New Zealand, in the South Pacific Ocean, part of Polynesia, positioned within a triangle formed by Tonga, Samoa and the Cook Islands, about 2,400 km northeast of New Zealand. It is a raised coral atoll east of Tonga. Its capital is Alofi. Its land area is about 261.46 square kilometres, and its 2022 census population was just 1,681, among the smallest national populations in the world.
