A marginal sea of the northeastern Indian Ocean between the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the coasts of Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia. Its waters were severely affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, generated by an undersea earthquake near Sumatra.
