A wide, shallow gulf on the Mediterranean coast of Libya, historically a contested maritime boundary that Libya at times claimed as internal waters, leading to naval confrontations with the United States in the 1980s. Its coastline remains sparsely developed compared to the rest of the Libyan littoral.
