The Hardangerfjord is the fifth-longest fjord in the world and the second-longest in Norway, extending about 179 kilometers inland from the Atlantic Ocean through Vestland county roughly 80 kilometers south of Bergen. It varies from 2 to 10 kilometers wide and reaches a maximum depth of 860 meters, with Odda and Leirvik among its principal settlements and Norway's third-largest glacier, Folgefonna, on its shores. Like Norway's other fjords, it was carved by glacial erosion, in this case beginning as the ice sheet filling the valley started melting around 8000 BCE.
