A wetland system in southern Iraq at the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, traditional home of the Marsh Arabs and long identified with the biblical Garden of Eden. Deliberately drained under Saddam Hussein's government in the 1990s, the marshes have been substantially, though incompletely, restored since 2003.
