The largest left-bank tributary of the Amazon, rising in Colombia and Venezuela and flowing across northern Brazil to meet the Amazon near Manaus in a dramatic confluence known as the meeting of waters. Its dark, tannin-stained waters are visibly distinct from the paler sediment-laden Amazon at their junction.
