A major tributary of the Mississippi River in the eastern United States, formed at Pittsburgh by the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers and flowing roughly 1,580 kilometers to its junction with the Mississippi. It historically marked a boundary between free and slave states before the American Civil War.
