A major river of northern Vietnam, rising in China's Yunnan province and flowing southeast through Hanoi to the Gulf of Tonkin through a broad delta. Its silt-laden waters, which give the river its name, have shaped the rice-growing plains of the Vietnamese heartland for millennia.
