A low-lying delta in the Netherlands where the Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt rivers meet the North Sea, densely populated and protected by an extensive system of dikes, dams and storm-surge barriers. The Delta Works built here after a catastrophic 1953 flood remain among the largest flood-defense engineering projects in the world.
