A large, shallow estuary on the coast of Northern California where several rivers, chiefly the Sacramento and San Joaquin, meet the Pacific Ocean through the Golden Gate. It is the largest estuary on the Pacific coast of the Americas and a major center of shipping, wetlands and urban development.
