A marginal sea of the northwestern Pacific enclosed by the Russian mainland, the Kamchatka Peninsula, the Kuril Islands and the island of Sakhalin. Its northern waters freeze extensively in winter, and it hosts important fisheries as well as offshore oil and gas fields.
