The Sognefjord, nicknamed the King of the Fjords, is Norway's longest and deepest fjord, stretching 205 kilometers inland from the open sea to the village of Skjolden in Vestland county. It reaches a maximum depth of 1,308 meters and a maximum width of 4.5 kilometers, passes through ten municipalities, and branches into smaller fjords including the Naeroyfjord, which along with the Geirangerfjord carries UNESCO World Heritage status. The whole Sognefjord system, including its branches, holds an estimated 500 cubic kilometers of water, and its name derives from a Norwegian word for suction, referring to the tidal currents at its mouth.
