A strait between Vancouver Island in Canada and the Olympic Peninsula in the United States, forming part of the international boundary and the main shipping approach to the ports of Seattle and Vancouver. It is named for the Greek navigator who sailed under Spanish commission and reported discovering it in the sixteenth century.
