A narrow strait separating the Italian mainland from the island of Sicily, associated since antiquity with the mythical sea monsters Scylla and Charybdis that were said to menace passing ships. Ferries cross it continuously, and it has long been proposed, without construction, as a site for a bridge linking Sicily to the mainland.
