The Arctic Ocean is the smallest, shallowest and coldest of the world's oceans, centered on the North Pole and largely covered by drifting sea ice that thickens each winter and retreats each summer, a retreat that has accelerated sharply since satellite records began. It is bounded by North America, Europe and Asia, and much of its water arrives from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans through narrow connecting straits rather than forming independently within the basin.
