Aasiaat is a town in the Qeqertalik municipality of western Greenland, part of the Kingdom of Denmark, on an island at the southern end of Disko Bay within the Aasiaat Archipelago. With about 2,992 residents as of 2025, it is Greenland fifth largest town and is sometimes called the Town of the Whales for the frequent sightings of whales and seals nearby. Founded in 1759 by Niels Egede, son of the missionary Hans Egede, the settlement moved to its current site in 1763 and was historically built on whaling and fishing, with cod processing becoming important by the 1930s.
