Aden is an ancient port city on the southern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, on the north coast of the Gulf of Aden near the eastern approach to the Red Sea, about 170 kilometers (110 miles) east of the Bab-el-Mandeb strait. It has served as the de facto capital of Yemen since 2014. Its strategic coastal position makes it a maritime hub connecting Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
