Adria

Adria is a town and comune in the province of Rovigo in the Veneto region of northern Italy, situated between the mouths of the Adige and Po rivers, with a population of 19,543 as of April 2017. Beneath the modern town lie the remains of the ancient Etruscan city of Atria or Hatria, founded around 530 to 520 BC and inhabited by Etruscans, Veneti, Greeks and Celts. Along with Spina, ancient Adria functioned as a major Etruscan port serving the inland city of Felsina, modern Bologna, and the Adriatic Sea likely takes its name from the settlement. The town declined after catastrophic flooding in 589 AD and did not recover its importance until land reclamation in the sixteenth century.
