Aelia Capitolina was a Roman colony founded in 129 or 130 AD during Emperor Hadrian's visit to Judaea, built on the ruins of Jerusalem after the city had been largely destroyed following the siege of 70 AD. Its founding transformed the site from a Jewish metropolis into a small pagan settlement dedicated to the cult of Capitoline Jupiter. The name and Roman-era layout persisted for roughly two centuries before the site returned to being known as Jerusalem.
