Aeminium

Aeminium was the ancient name of the city now known as Coimbra, Portugal, founded by the Romans in the time of Augustus under the protection of nearby Conimbriga. The Roman city was walled and laid out on an orthogonal plan, with an aqueduct and a documented triumphal arch destroyed in 1778, and after the Suebi destroyed Conimbriga in 468 its inhabitants fled to Aeminium and the settlement kept its original name. The most substantial surviving remnant today is the cryptoporticus, an underground gallery of arched corridors built in the 1st or 2nd century to support the city's forum, later built over by the bishop's palace that now houses the Machado de Castro National Museum.
