Aguascalientes is the capital of the Mexican state of Aguascalientes and its most populous city, as well as the head of the Aguascalientes Municipality. It had a population of 948,990 inhabitants in 2012, rising to 1,225,432 across the metropolitan area, which also includes the municipalities of Jesus Maria and San Francisco de los Romo. The city sits in the Bajio region of North-Central Mexico, on a steppe-climate valley at 1,880 meters above sea level.
