Ahuachapán

Central America

Ahuachapan is the capital of Ahuachapan department, the westernmost department of El Salvador, near the Guatemalan border. The city sits in a highland coffee-growing zone and lends its name to the Ahuachapan Geothermal Field, one of Central America's first and largest geothermal power plants, developed from the 1970s onward. Ahuachapan retains a colonial-era grid layout and a central plaza typical of Salvadoran department capitals.
