Aktau is a port city in southwestern Kazakhstan, on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea on the Mangyshlak Peninsula in Mangystau Region. It was established in the mid-20th century on otherwise barren land because of nearby uranium deposits, and grew into Kazakhstan's main hub for the offshore Caspian oil and gas industry. Its population has grown quickly, from about 183,000 in 2019 to roughly 271,000 by 2023.
