Al Wakrah is the capital city of the Al Wakrah Municipality in Qatar, its eastern edge touching the Persian Gulf just south of Doha. Originally a small fishing and pearling village, it was an important pearling center when Qatar's economy depended on the industry, with around 300 ships recorded there by 1920. It has since grown into one of Qatar's more populous cities, with more than 80,000 residents, and gained further importance after large-scale oil operations began due to its proximity to the Mesaieed Industrial Area.
