Albany is a port city in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, about 418 kilometers southeast of Perth, on the northern edge of Princess Royal Harbour within King George Sound. Established on 26 December 1826 as a New South Wales military outpost, it is the oldest colonial settlement in Western Australia, predating Perth and Fremantle by more than two years, and served as the colony's main deep-water port until Fremantle's inner harbour opened in 1897. It recorded a population of 35,053 at the 2021 census, ranking 44th among Australian cities, and carries the dual Indigenous Noongar name Kinjarling, meaning place of plenty and place of rain, formally adopted alongside its English name from 2020.
