Albuquerque is the most populous city in the U.S. state of New Mexico, founded in 1706 as a Spanish colonial villa and named in honor of a Spanish duke. Straddling the Rio Grande in the high desert of the American Southwest, Albuquerque is known for its Sandia Peak tramway, its blend of Hispanic, Native American and Anglo cultures reflected in its historic Old Town, and its large annual hot air balloon fiesta.
