Alea (Arcadia)

Southern Europe

Alea was a town of ancient Arcadia between Orchomenus and Stymphalus, situated in the territory of one or the other. In the time of Pausanias, in the 2nd century, it held temples of the Ephesian Artemis, of Athena Alea, and of Dionysus. Alea was never a town of importance, and some ancient writers mistakenly placed at it the celebrated temple of Athena Alea that actually stood at Tegea.
