Amantia

Amantia was an ancient city in southern Illyria that served as the main settlement of the Amantes tribe, its ruins located near the modern village of Ploçë in Vlorë County, Albania. Ancient sources describe it as an Illyrian rather than Epirote or Macedonian foundation, and its massive fortification walls were built before the end of the 4th century BC. The city joined the Epirote League in 230 BC and later came under the Roman province of Macedonia after the annexation of 148 BC, and around the early 2nd century BC it received sacred Greek envoys known as theoroi, a sign of its recognition as a Hellenized city. The Albanian government designated the site an archaeological park in 2003.
