Amasya

Amasya is a city in northern Turkey's Black Sea Region, called Amaseia or Amasia in antiquity, and the seat of Amasya Province and Amasya District, with a population of 114,921 recorded in 2021. Set apart from the rest of Anatolia in a narrow valley along the Yesilirmak River above the Black Sea coast, it has a history of 7,500 years and was the home of the geographer Strabo and the birthplace of the 15th century Armenian scholar and physician Amirdovlat Amasiatsi, as well as the Ottoman sultans Murad II and Selim I. As a wealthy provincial capital across antiquity and the Ottoman period, Amasya produced kings and princes of Pontus, whose rock tombs are carved into the cliffs above the town, alongside restored Ottoman-period wooden Yaliboyu houses along the river.
