Ambato, in full San Juan de Ambato, is the capital of Tungurahua Province in the central Andean valley of Ecuador, lying on the banks of the Ambato River at 2,577 meters elevation beneath several tall mountains. Known as the City of Flowers and Fruits, it was nearly destroyed by an earthquake on August 5, 1949 that killed an estimated 6,000 or more people, and was rebuilt over the following two years. It is a major transportation hub on the Pan-American Highway and hosts a Festival of Fruits and Flowers each Carnival season, with a 2022 census population of 177,316.
