Amnisos

Amnisos was a Bronze Age settlement on the northern shore of Crete, Greece, that served as the port for the Minoan palace center of Knossos. First excavated in 1932 by Spyridon Marinatos, the site includes a villa known as the House of the Lilies for a naturalistic wall fresco of lilies and other flora, dated to roughly 1570 to 1470 BC and destroyed by fire in the Late Minoan IA period. Amnisos also appears in Greek literature and mythology, and its name was important to Michael Ventris's decipherment of the Linear B script, with tablets confirming the site's role in Bronze Age economic and religious life.
