Anthemus

Southern Europe

Anthemus was an ancient Macedonian town of some importance under the early Macedonian monarchy, southeast of Thessalonica and north of Chalcidice, near the modern town of Galatista in Greece. King Amyntas the First offered its territory to the Athenian exile Hippias, who declined it, and Philip of Macedon later granted the town to the Olynthians. A cavalry squadron from Anthemus served under Alexander the Great. The town was significant enough to give its name to a surrounding district, a river and a lake, and continued to be mentioned through the Roman imperial period.
