Aphrodisias was an ancient Greco-Roman city in the Caria region of southwestern Anatolia, in present-day Turkey, named for its sanctuary to the goddess Aphrodite. It became renowned in antiquity as a center of sculpture, drawing on nearby marble quarries to become one of the leading sculptural schools of the Roman world, with its work found across the Mediterranean. The site preserves a well-preserved stadium, theater and temple complex, and excavations have recovered a large body of sculpture now displayed in an on-site museum.
