Apollonia was an ancient Greek trade colony in southern Illyria, founded around 600 BC by colonists from Corinth, located near present-day Albania on the right bank of the Aoos, or Vjose, river, about 10 kilometers from the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea. The city flourished under Roman rule and hosted a renowned school that attracted students from across the empire, including the young Augustus, but decline began in the third century AD after an earthquake silted its harbor, and the city was abandoned by the fourth century AD.
