Appingedam

Appingedam is a city and former municipality in the northeastern Netherlands. Although its exact age is uncertain, historical research shows the site on which the city was built had been inhabited for over a thousand years, with the earliest traces of settlement found in the Wierde quarter in the northern part of the city center. A street of the same name still runs along the waterfront there today, and the historic East-West Canal, known as the Diep, dug and diked along the south side of the Wierde, still shapes the layout of the downtown area.
